The origins of Itálica date back to 206 BC, when the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio defeated the Carthaginians at the Battle of Ilipa and established a legionary settlement on Cerro de San Antonio, where a Turdetanian community had existed since the 4th century BC.
Although the two communities initially coexisted near the Guadalquivir, Roman social and political customs soon prevailed. In the second half of the 1st century BC, the city obtained municipal status and later, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (AD 117–138), became a colony with the same administrative status as Rome.
It was the birthplace of Emperors Trajan and Hadrian and the home of many senators of the period.
Today, the Itálica Archaeological Site features a magnificent Roman amphitheatre. Visitors can walk along the ancient street plan and discover its houses, public buildings, works of art and objects from everyday Roman life.
